On May 4, 1842, the Prophet Joseph Smith first administered the temple endowment to nine Church leaders in the upper room of his Red Brick Store.

Emma Smith was called to serve as the first president of the organization, a fulfillment of revelation given years earlier (see D&C 25:7).
